How to thrive as a lone wolf when all you want is a wolf pack…
As a one-person marketing team, you are responsible for the success of your company or organization’s marketing efforts. This means that you need to be organized, efficient, and strategic in your approach to marketing.
No pressure – you’ve got this.
First, it’s important to understand the goals of your company and align your marketing efforts with those goals. This will help you prioritize your tasks and focus on the most important aspects of your job. If your company or organization has a mission and a vision statement, start there and focus your marketing efforts to achieve your mission and vision.
Next, you need to develop a marketing plan that outlines the tactics you will use to achieve your goals. If you’re not sure how to develop a marketing plan, here are a few resources to help get you started:
- Building an Effective Marketing Plan, in this episode of “Ope, Here’s a Little Marketing For Ya” John, Ellen, and Elli discuss the steps to take and the benefits of creating an effective marketing strategy.
- How to Pitch a Digital Marketing Plan, ok, you’ve created your marketing plan, now you need leadership to get on board. Learn how to properly pitch your plan, address concerns, and point out the benefits to get the approval necessary to move forward.
- How Traditional Marketing & Digital Marketing Can Work Together, in this episode of “Ope, Here’s a Little Marketing For Ya” the team discusses the difference between traditional and digital marketing, the pros and cons for both, and how to incorporate them into your marketing plan.
Once you have a plan in place, it’s important to regularly track and measure your results to ensure that your efforts are creating the desired effect. This will allow you to make adjustments as needed and continually improve your marketing efforts. Tracking your results is also an effective way to share your progress with leadership.
In addition to these core responsibilities, a one-person marketing team should be adept at managing their time and resources effectively. This means being able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize the most important ones, as well as being able to delegate tasks to others when possible. You can’t do it all, but being able to prioritize tasks will prove beneficial in the long run.
Asking For Help
There may come a time when a one-person marketing team just isn’t cutting it anymore, your company or organization is seeing growth (which means you are doing your job!) and you can no longer keep up with the workload. It’s ok to go to leadership and request assistance.
First, make sure leadership understands the importance of a thriving marketing team. Share the data you collected as a result of your marketing efforts. It can be easier to see the importance when looking at numbers.
Once you’ve got leadership on board, here are some budget friendly ways to expand your team:
1. Volunteers
Create a team of volunteers within your office to help with capturing photos, client reviews, creating captions for social posts, etc. This is especially beneficial when your company or organization has an event coming up whether it be a holiday party, a charity drive, golf outing, community event, etc. Establishing a team of volunteers to grab photos at the event is essential to getting good coverage.
2. Freelance
Inquire about hiring a freelancer to help with your most time consuming work – designing graphics, copywriting, social, etc. You could request one for a one-time project or for recurring monthly work that needs to be lifted off your plate.
3. Digital Marketing Agency
Consider hiring a digital marketing agency (like Shout It Out Design!) to help with email marketing, digital ads, social media, your website, and more! If you’re not sure if it is time to hire a digital marketing agency, we recommend checking out our podcast episode, “Should I Hire a Marketing Agency?” Remember – a digital marketing agency should enhance the marketing efforts you’ve already started and be able to provide an outsider’s perspective with fresh ideas.
Your leadership will likely want to look at the budget and see which option would be the best solution all around.
