Social Media Trend of the Week
“Ah Already Wired You The Money” from “Inventing Anna”. We’ve seen social media influence music, movies, and tv shows before. But nothing really compares to the influence that TikTok has built up in the past two years. A few examples that come to mind are Lil’ NasX, Willow Smith, Tiger King, Love is Blind, Squid Games, Inventing Anna and so much more.
Apparently, people either hate or love Julia Garner’s accent in this new show. This particular sound bite started as a trend to make the argument that maybe the accent sounded a little stressed (others’ opinions, not ours!). But over time, it morphed into people making videos about their pets needing to pay them for rent, food, toys, etc. If you’re looking for a good laugh, we recommend watching this SNL skit about the trend and the show as well!

Should You Hop on the Trend?
In our first episode, the podcast team thought it would be worthwhile to cover the basics of social media trends: where they originated, what they look like today, and answered the question: “should businesses be partaking in them?”
While our conversation dives deeper into this topic, Elli, John and Ellen had a few key points your organization should keep in mind before you decide to take part in the next viral social media trend:
- Ask yourself, “Does it align with my brand”?
- If the answer is yes, go for it!
- If the answer is no, consider: would it be positive or negative friction with my brand’s image?
- Do you have the bandwidth to jump on the trend right now?
- As a business, the sweet spot of a trend curve is right before the arch. If you’re late, you could be seen as irrelevant, out of touch, or dated.
- Do you have a social media plan in place to approve content quickly?
- Trends can sometimes be over in a day! If you can’t be prepared to create and approve content in a timely manner, then trends may not be for you.
- What is your end goal?
- Sometimes, trends can result in an increase in conversions or sales, especially if you catch the wave a the perfect time. But more often than not, it is just a way to push out your brand and increase awareness.
- Remember, social media is not a place for you to talk at your audience. It is a place for conversation and interaction.
Sometimes doing the unexpected as a brand can really propel you forward – but you have to be confident in taking that calculated risk! Listen to this week’s podcast for the full conversation and to hear the weekly “What Grinds My Gears” segment where someone on the team discusses something about our industry that frustrates them and solutions for improving it!
