College Recruiting Web Site Design for Sam DeRoy

As a high school soccer coach, part of our job is to help the players progress (if they have the talent and drive) to continue playing in college.

Obviously, not all athletes have the ability to play in college and some of the ones that do, don’t want to pursue it. Sam DeRoy is not one of those players.

I’ve known Sam for as long as I’ve been coaching at Liberty High School in Powell, OH. Next year will be our fourth year in the program. When his parents approached me about putting together a highlight reel from his amazing Junior year, I counter offered with a designing web site for him instead.

His parents wanted something to send to college coaches and recruiters to get some attention coming his direction. (Sam being 2nd Team All-State was a good start..!) I designed the site to be a running narrative of his soccer career which includes high school and club soccer. His club team plays all over the country, and a website is a perfect ‘advertising’ tool to send to coaches to see game film, see his stats and view his upcoming schedule.

There is also a section for game film on the site. We decided that it would be best to put halves of film on the site instead of cut up ‘highlight reels’ so the coaches could get more of a feel about Sam’s over all game. (Not just his goal scoring abilities). The film section is password protected so only college coaches can view the film.

The combination of the website and Sam’s natural abilities as a soccer player will hopefully make his recruiting process a seamless one. This is a tool that will catch the eye of college coaches around the country. Not only is it a different approach, but coaches can view his up to date information anywhere. A highlight DVD isn’t as portable or as easy to update as a website.
