Seriously, what?
My grandma. My using a walker around the house, uses a golf cart to ‘walk’ her dogs (no joke, take a minute to mull that idea over), iPad wielding grandma is on Facebook.
Allow me to take a minute to get all of my obnoxious remaining college pictures off of my page….
Ok, I’m back.
So again, really? Is this what the world is coming to? Nearly 80-year-old women on social media sharing what their dog did, coming up with new ways to bombard me with fwd’d email that isn’t funny, playing the “I answered a question about you” Facebook Apps and commenting on my Foursquare check-in at the local pub? I think I’m done with Facebook.
Re-watching “The Social Network” made me realize that the idea of Facebook was an exclusive club of your closest friends at college. That merged into a network of your friends and family everywhere and now has turned into a connection of anyone you meet at a party or a friend of a friend of a friend. You only have 250 friends on Facebook? What a loser. The ‘coolness of Facebook’ has gone by the wayside.
Watching the final four games last weekend, I cringed every time I heard the CBS announcers plug the Coke Zero Social Arena. It just seems that companies are throwing the word social in things because social = cool. But when an old person starts talking about being social, I just get turned off.
I preach all day to clients about how still very shallow the social media advertising market pool is. Possibilities are endless. But now that apparently EVERYONE is on Facebook, it might have all changed.
I guess I could look at this as a positive, since everyone is on Facebook, there’s more people for my clients to market to, which would help them in the long run. So listen up vet clinic & senior living facilities, Facebook it up.
I, on the other hand will be abandoning Facebook. I’m not sure if it’s as cool now that senior citizens are allowed in. I mean would you go to a social networking mixer at Shady Oaks Senior Living Facility?
I guess they have shuffleboard, checkers & all the Jell-O you can eat…
Alright, next Thursday ‘night’ at 4:15 (after dinner, of course) I’ll see you there G-ma! I wonder if 4Sq has an Old Folks Home badge? If so, it’s mine.
